New Japan Pro Wrestling se encuentra por iniciar la gira Road to Destruction que culminará el 28 de septiembre con Destruction in Kobe. Es uno de los grandes eventos del año en NJPW y veremos varios campeonatos en juego. Uno de los combates es un enfrentamiento entre Gabe Kidd y Shingo Takagi, en el que el británico de Bullet Club War Dogs defenderá el Campeonato Peso Pesado Global IWGP ante el “Rampage Dragon” de Japón.

Para iniciar septiembre, Pep S. Caro tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a Shingo Takagi. El carismático luchador y retador al Campeonato Peso Pesado Global IWGP respondió varias de las preguntas de Pep, a unos días de su próxima combate titular en NJPW.

Pep: Competiste en México por primera vez con CMLL, lo que también marcó el final oficial de Los Ingobernables de Japón. ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia en México?

Shingo: México fue una experiencia muy significativa. Me alegro de haberlo hecho. LIJ fue una verdadera colección de espíritus libres; fue bueno ponerle un punto final definitivo en el lugar donde empezó todo.

Pep: Luego pasamos directamente al G1 Climax 35. Terminaste el torneo con 10 puntos. Eso significa 5 victorias y 4 derrotas. ¿Cómo describirías tu experiencia este año?

Shingo: Al estar en siete de estos (G1 Climax), ya estoy acostumbrado al calendario. Eso no es un problema, pero el daño definitivamente se acumula con cada combate, y este fue uno muy exigente físicamente.

Pep: Una de esas derrotas fue contra Konosuke Takeshita. Fue una revancha directa de Wrestle Kingdom 19. Perdiste en lo que muchos han llamado el mejor combate del torneo. ¿Cómo te sentiste en el combate?

Shingo: La reacción de los fans es una cosa, pero la cuestión es que era un combate que no podía permitirme perder y lo perdí. Ahora estoy 0-2 abajo contra él y tengo que superar a Takeshita cuanto antes.

Pep: Durante el torneo, obtuviste dos puntos porque Gabe Kidd tuvo que retirarse por lesión. Sin embargo, Gabe regresó a competir la semana pasada, pero en AEW en Forbidden Door. Te enfrentarás a él en Destruction en Kobe por el Campeonato Global Peso Pesado IWGP. ¿Qué te parece como competidor?

Shingo: Las lesiones ocurren en cualquier momento, así que cuando supe que estaba fuera del G1, pensé que no valía la pena que intentara superar la lesión rápido y empeorar su rodilla. En cuanto a lo que ha hecho entre NJPW y AEW y cómo se ha comportado este año, creo que hay muchas cosas que no entenderé del todo hasta que esté allí y pelee contra él en Kobe. Desde mi punto de vista ahora mismo, no me gusta lo que está haciendo y no me interesa.

Pep: Durante el verano, has estado formando equipo con tus antiguos compañeros de LIJ, así como con Daiki Nagai, quien se unió voluntariamente a “Unaffiliated”. ¿Cómo es la relación entre los miembros de “Unaffiliated” ahora? ¿Qué te parece Nagai como competidor?

Shingo: Nagai es un chico con ganas de pelear y no le teme a la pelea. Es una buena actitud. En cuanto a nosotros, como grupo, quizá sea hora de empezar a pensar en un nombre oficial.

Pep: Vamos camino al Tokyo Dome, y ya sabemos que Takeshita aprovechará su oportunidad por titular del G1 Climax para desafiar al Campeón Mundial Peso Pesado IWGP en King of Pro Wrestling, al igual que Zack Sabre Jr. en 2024. En tu caso, ¿qué te ves haciendo en Wrestle Kingdom 20? ¿Qué tipo de combate te gustaría tener?

Shingo: ¿Qué tal… Místico? Creo que eso estaría muy bien.

Pep: Gracias por participar en esta entrevista. Por último, ¿tienes un mensaje para tus fans de todo el mundo que leen esto?

Shingo: No he tenido grandes resultados este año, así que me juego mucho personalmente el 28 de septiembre en Kobe. Estaré entusiasmado y listo para darlo todo en ese combate.

Pep: You competed in Mexico for the first time with CMLL, which also marked the official end of Los Ingobernables de Japon. How was your experience in Mexico?

Shingo: Mexico was a really meaningful experience. I’m glad I was able to do it. LIJ was a real collection of free spirits; it was good to put one more final end to it in the place where it began.

Pep: Then we went directly to G1 Climax 35. You ended the tournament with 10 points. That means 5 victories and 4 losses. How would you describe your experience this year?

Shingo: Being in seven of these (G1 Climax) now, I’m used to the schedule. That isn’t a problem, but the damage definitely mounts up with each match, and this one was a really physically demanding one.

Pep: One of those losses was against Konosuke Takeshita. It was a direct rematch from Wrestle Kingdom 19. You lost in what many have called the best match of the tournament. How did the match feel?

Shingo: The fan reaction is one thing, but the point is that it was a match I couldn’t afford to lose and I lost. I’m down 0-2 to him now, and I have to overcome Takeshita soon.

Pep: During the tournament, you earned two points because Gabe Kidd had to withdraw due to injury. However, Gabe returned to compete last week, but in AEW at Forbidden Door. You will face him at Destruction in Kobe for the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship. What are your impressions of him as a competitor?

Shingo: Injuries happen at any time, so when I heard he was out of the G1 all I thought was that it wasn’t worth him trying to work through the injury and making his knee worse. As for what he’s done in between NJPW and AEW and how he’s acted this year, I think there’s a lot I won’t really understand until I get in there and fight him in Kobe. From my standpoint right now, I don’t like what he’s doing, and I don’t find any interest in it.

Pep: Over the summer, you’ve been teaming with your former LIJ teammates, as well as with Daiki Nagai, who voluntarily joined “Unaffiliated”. What’s the relationship like between the “Unaffiliated” members now? What are your impressions of Nagai as a competitor?

Shingo: Nagai is a hungry kid and he isn’t afraid to pick a fight. That’s a good attitude to have. As for us as a group, maybe it’s time we start thinking of an official name.

Pep: We’re on the road to the Tokyo Dome, and we already know that Takeshita will use his G1 Climax title opportunity to challenge the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion at King of Pro Wrestling, just like Zack Sabre Jr. did in 2024. In your case, what do you see yourself doing at Wrestle Kingdom 20? What kind of match would you like to have?

Shingo: …How about Mistico? I think that would be pretty good.

Pep: Thank you for participating in this interview. Finally, do you have a message for your fans around the world reading this?

Shingo: I haven’t produced any big results this year so I have a lot on the line personally on September 28 in Kobe. I’ll be fired up and ready to deliver in that bout.
