Entrevista con MAO (DDT): Lo profesional y lo personal – Parte 2

Dramatic Dream Team Pro Wrestling viene realizando su programación de verano en Japón y en Agosto realizará una nueva edición de WRESTLE PETER PAN. La edición 2025 del evento, se realizará en dos jornadas: 30 de agosto en Higashin Arena y 31 de agosto en Korakuen Hall. Uno de los combates confirmados para la segunda noche es un enfrentamiento entre Minoru Suzuki (c) y MAO por el DDT Universal Championship.

Pep S. Caro tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a MAO, retador al Campeonato Universal, antes de este importante show. MAO, es una de los luchadores con mayor actividad internacional en el roster de DDT. Los temas fueron sobre sus inicios en la lucha libre, ganar el torneo King of DDT 2024, The 37KAMIINA, STRANGE LOVE CONNECTION, Mike Bailey, Minoru Suzuki, Dream Match, DOS QUATRO y mucho más.

Nos gustaría destacar que esta es la primera entrevista que MAO realiza para un medio informativo en español y sin haber competido en un país en el que se hable ese idioma todavía.

Entrevista con MAO (DDT): Lo profesional y lo personal – Parte 2

Pep: Tu presente está en STRANGE LOVE CONNECTION con KANON. ¿Cómo es tu relación con él? ¿Crees que son una “pareja perfecta”? ¿Cuáles son sus objetivos como equipo?

MAO: Cuando KANON aún estaba en DAMNATION T.A., podría decirse que sentí que era un desperdicio que estuviera ahí, porque tenía mucho más potencial esperándolo, y fue justo cuando dejé The 37KAMIINA. Así que cuando Kanon fue expulsado de DAMNATION T.A., el momento fue perfecto. De hecho, tenemos la misma edad. Ambos tenemos nombres de ring en inglés, ya sabes, con mayúsculas. Y somos grandes fans de TAKA Michinoku, así que nos juntamos fácilmente.

En cuanto a KANON, ya sabes, todavía es bastante nuevo en su carrera, apenas lleva unos cinco años. Así que todavía tiene mucho margen de crecimiento, tiene potencial para crecer y mejorar. Así que, ahora mismo, KANON y los demás estamos en backstage pensando: “¿Qué hacemos hoy?”. Sabes, hoy simplemente hacemos y pensamos, tenemos conversaciones casuales, charlas informales todo el tiempo sobre ser libres, sobre ser los más libres, sobre disfrutar de lo que podemos hacer con la unidad. Y en cuanto a nuestro objetivo, queremos ser rivales de The 37KAMIINA.

Pep: KANON también es alumno de TAKA y valora su trabajo, así que pensé que podría ser otra razón que los unió.

MAO: Podrías decir que ahora mismo existe la conexión con TAKA Michinoku, pero no es lo que más nos conecta. Era más bien, en cierto sentido, como lo que decía antes sobre The 37KAMIINA. Sentía que me estaba conteniendo. Quizás ya había alcanzado mi techo. Y KANON también se contenía cuando aún estaba en DAMNATION T.A. Así que ahora que somos libres, y ya sabes, somos nosotros mismos, podemos hacer lo que nos dé la gana. Y es realmente así. Se nota también en cosas como nuestra canción de entrada.

Pep: Este año participaste en el NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 32. Terminaste el Bloque B con 12 puntos. Solo perdiste contra YOH, El Desperado y Titan. ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia en este torneo? ¿Qué combate consideras el más difícil?

MAO: Una de mis metas o sueños como luchador era competir en el torneo. Siempre me ha gustado Best of the Super Juniors como fan. Solía ir a los eventos. Era mi serie favorita de toda la lucha libre profesional. Así que tuve mucha suerte y me alegré de poder participar este año. Sentí que fue una participación muy significativa porque, ya sabes, pasé todos mis años luchando en DDT y he estado construyendo mi carrera. No fue en vano porque, trabajando en DDT, también pude competir en BOSJ y representar a DDT. Es increíble.

Y, sabes, creo que el combate más desafiante fue contra Titan, porque fue en el Korakuen Hall, con casa llena. Y, sabes, sentí: “¡Guau! ¡Realmente estoy viviendo la vida de la lucha libre!”, frente a toda esta gente y contra un oponente muy interesante de todo el mundo. Sentí que este fue un período de crecimiento muy importante para mí. Fue una serie muy especial para mí.

Pep: El Desperado se está consolidando como el luchador junior más destacado del mundo. ¿Qué te parece Despe como competidor? ¿Cómo es tu relación actual con él? ¿Te gustaría una revancha, pero en DDT, o tiene que ser en NJPW?

MAO: En cierto sentido, Desperado-san y yo tenemos gustos muy similares. No solo muy similares, sino que lo que nos gusta y lo que no nos gusta es exactamente lo mismo. Aunque somos bastante diferentes en edad, tenemos la misma vibra. Tenemos la misma visión de la lucha libre y de la vida. Somos prácticamente la misma persona, como si fuéramos de la misma familia. Así que, idealmente, quería ganar el Best of the Super Junior, ganar el torneo, retar a Despe-san por el título, pelear con él ahí mismo. Por supuesto, eso no sucedió, y si no me equivoco, Despe-san también dijo que quería una revancha, así que ojalá pueda suceder. No en el ring de New Japan, ni en el de DDT, sino fuera del ring.

Pep: Cuando le pregunté a El Desperado sobre ti antes del torneo, dijo: “No creo que haya nadie en la lucha libre que encarne mejor el espíritu de hacer exactamente lo que uno quiere hacer”.

MAO: Quizás él sea un poco demasiado libre, ya sabes, demasiado único. Dentro y fuera del ring.

Pep: El verano sigue calentándose, y DDT tiene dos noches de WRESTLE PETER PAN programadas para el 30 y 31 de agosto. En la segunda noche, desafiarás a Minoru Suzuki por el Campeonato Universal de DDT. ¿Cuáles son tus expectativas para este combate? ¿Qué impresiones tienes de Suzuki como competidor? ¿Qué les dirías a los fans para animarlos a asistir al evento?

MAO: Bueno, en cuanto a Suzuki-san, la primera vez que nos conocimos formalmente fue en un evento de RevPro en 2019 en Inglaterra. Hasta entonces, solo eramos conocidos pero no habíamos interactuado. Pensé que era muy intimidante, pero en realidad era muy amable. Cuando Suzuki-san me vio allí, me llamó y me dijo: “Oye, japonés, ¿has dejado DDT o algo?”. Así que nos conocimos formalmente. Intercambiamos saludos, como saludos entre bastidores y en otros lugares. Y luego, hace unos dos años, hicimos un combate de seis hombres en DDT. En ese momento, yo hacía el estilo de pareja idiota. Así que Suzuki-san simplemente me llamaba “pareja idiota”, y ese fue nuestro comienzo también.

El año pasado en BZW, hubo un evento donde Suzuki-san y Kushida-san también estuvieron en Francia conmigo. Así que, al final, hicimos turismo juntos. Pensé: “¡Ay, no puedo creer que esté haciendo turismo con Minoru Suzuki en Francia!”. Así que, en cierto sentido, nos hicimos más amigos. Pudimos ver la Torre Eiffel juntos. Y luego, creo que fue en un evento en mi ciudad natal, Osaka, al que también invité a Suzuki-san. Así que supongo que todo esto llevó a que este combate se celebrara el mes que viene.

Pep: Eres uno de los luchadores de DDT en activo con más experiencia internacional. ¿Hay algún país que aún no hayas visitado y en el que te gustaría competir?

MAO: He estado pensando mucho en viajar al extranjero para luchar y la gente dice que tienes que ir a México, ¿sabes? Tienes que ir a México, pero la verdad es que no quiero ir. Lo siento un poco, pero ahora mismo no me interesa mucho ir a México. Pero me encanta Estados Unidos.

Pep: Hemos visto que UJPW ha abierto muchas oportunidades de Dream Match. Luchadores como Konosuke Takeshita, que tiene contratos con varias compañías, también pueden competir con luchadores de todo el mundo. Si pudieras elegir un oponente al que aún no te hayas enfrentado, de cualquier parte del mundo, ¿a quién elegirías?

MAO: Mi combate número 1 como posibilidad para un Dream Match es Moonlight Express contra Motor City Machine Guns. Es un Dream Match porque durante ZERO1, Alex Shelly estuvo allí. Él también tuvo una carrera en New Japan Pro Wrestling. Motor City Machine Guns tiene un estilo muy único. Combinan a la perfección el estilo americano y el japonés. Y creo que yo también lo tengo, ya sabes, tengo el estilo japonés y el estilo indie americano. Creo que ahora mismo soy uno de los mejores combinando esos estilos. Y luego, tener a Mike Bailey como compañero de equipo, sería un choque de estilos muy interesante si ese combate se concretara. Ojalá algún día.

Pep: Dejando de lado la lucha libre, ¿podrías contarnos sobre tus aficiones? ¿Qué te gusta hacer en tu tiempo libre cuando no estás en un combate?

MAO: Cuando no estoy luchando ese día, probablemente esté trabajando en el material de mi banda. Y cuando no estoy haciendo eso, simplemente estoy relajándome en casa. Pensando en la lucha libre. Simplemente pensando en algo. Ya sea relajándome en casa, relajándome en el parque, relajándome en la sauna, relajándome mientras conduzco, siempre estoy pensando en algo. En lugar de simplemente sentarme y no hacer nada, siempre estoy pensando en algo.

Pep: Sabemos que te apasiona la música y que tienes una banda, DOS QUATRO. ¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo al crear música? ¿Qué encuentras en común entre hacer música y la lucha libre?

MAO: En DOS QUATRO, hacemos presentaciones y cómo interpretamos música hardcore, obviamente es pesada. Pero, aun así, elegimos algo un poco diferente a cómo suena la música hardcore normal. Es nuestro estilo único. La estructura de mi música y cómo estructuro mis combates, se puede ver que es casi igual. Tengo mi propio estilo único, ya sea interpretando música o en el ring de lucha libre.

Pep: Tu lema es “LUCHA JODIDA PARA UN MUNDO JODIDO”. Después de experimentar más del mundo, ¿cómo describirías lo que significa eso para alguien que aún no te conoce?

MAO: En cierto modo, aprendí de este estilo, ya sabes, cómo lo adquirí de The 37KAMIINA. Puede ser muy difícil entender realmente el significado del lema. Parece genial. Pero en realidad, en cierto modo, lo que hacemos en el ring es un poco desastroso. Ya saben, es difícil entrar. Pero una vez que entran en este mundo que creé, es difícil salir. Es un verdadero pantano del que nunca se sale, y me alegra mucho poder repetir este estilo. Y lo que estamos haciendo con STRANGE LOVE CONNECTION, aunque todavía esté en desarrollo. Espero que la gente entienda lo que significa cuando empiecen a ver lo que estamos haciendo.

Pep: Your present is in STRANGE LOVE CONNECTION with KANON. What’s your relationship with him like? What do you think makes you too a perfect match? What are your goals as a team?

MAO:When KANON was still in DAMNATION T.A, you could say I felt a bit like it’s a waste that KANON was inside there because he has a much more bigger potential waiting for him and it was just about the time when I left The 37KAMIINA, so when KANON was like removed forcefully from DAMNATION T.A, so the timing was perfect. So, actually we were of the same age. We both have English ring names, you know, in full English caps. And we both are kind of huge fans of TAKA Michinoku, so we easily got together.

So, as for KANON, you know, he’s still pretty new in his career, just about like for five years, not very long. So he still has lots of room to grow, the potential is there for him to grow bigger and better. So, right now, KANON, as well as the others, we are in backstage just thinking okay what should we do today? You know, We just do and think today, we just have random conversations, just casual talking all the time about being free, you know, just being the most free, just enjoying what we can do with the unit. And as for goal, we want to be the rivals of The 37KAMIINA.

Pep: KANON is also a student of TAKA and values his work so I though it might be another reason that brough you together.

MAO: You could say like right now, that the TAKA Michinoku connection is a thing, but like, it’s not really the biggest thing that is connecting us. It was more like, in a sense, my mouth was in The 37KAMIINA. I felt like I was holding back in a way. And KANON was also holding back when he was still in DAMNATION T.A. So now that we are free, and you know, we are our own man, we can just do whatever the hell we want. And it’s truly like that. You can see that also with things like our entrance theme song.

Pep: This year, you participated in the NJPW Best of the Super Juniors 32. You finished the B Block with 12 points. You only lost to YOH, El Desperado, and Titan. How was your experience in this tournament? Which match do you consider to be the most difficult for you?

MAO: One of my goals or dreams as a wrestler was competing in the tournament. I’ve always liked the Best of the Super Juniors as a fan. I used to go to the shows. It was my favorite series in all of the professional wrestling. So, I was just very fortunate and glad to be able to take part this year. And I felt like it was a very meaningful participation because, you know, I spent all my years wrestling in DDT and I’ve been building my career up. Wasn’t a waste because, you know, working in DDT, I got to also compete in BOSJ and representing DDT. It’s pretty amazing.

And, you know, I think the most challenging match was against Titan because it was in the Korakuen Hall, full house Korakuen against Titan. And, you know, I felt like, wow, I’m really living the wrestling life, huh? In front of all these people, and against a very interesting opponent from the world. It felt like this was a really important growth period for me. So, it was a very special series for me.

Pep: El Desperado is arguably establishing himself as the most prominent junior wrestler in the world. What are your impressions of Despe as a competitor? What’s your relationship with him currently like? Would you like a rematch, but in DDT, or does it have to be in NJPW?

MAO: So, you know, in a sense, Desperado-san and I we have very similar likes. Not even just very similar, the things that we like and the things that we dislike are exactly the same, even though we are like pretty different in terms of age. We have the same vibes. We have the same, you know, views on wrestling and life. We’re like, pretty much almost the same person in a sense, like, you know, both of the same feather that flock together. So, ideally, I really wanted to win the Best of the Super Junior, you know, win the tournament, challenge Despe-san for the title, you know, fight him right there. Of course, that didn’t happen, and if I’m not wrong, Despe-san also said he wanted a rematch, so hopefully it can happen. Not in the New Japan ring, not in the DDT ring, but outside the ring.

Pep: When I asked El Desperado about you before the tournament, he said “I don’t think there’s anybody in wrestling who more embodies the spirit of doing exactly what you want to do”.

MAO: He might be a little bit too free, you know, too unique. Outside and inside the ring.

Pep: Summer continues to heat up, and DDT has two nights of WRESTLE PETER PAN scheduled for August 30 and 31. On the second night, you’ll challenge Minoru Suzuki for the DDT Universal Championship. What are your expectations for this match? What are your impressions of Suzuki as a competitor? What would you say to the fans to encourage them to attend the event?

MAO: So, as for Suzuki-san, the first time we formally met was actually at a RevPro show in 2019 in England. Until then we had like no sort of acquaintance to never met before. So, I thought he was so scary, but he was actually very nice. When Suzuki-san first saw me there, he called me and said “Hey, Japanese, did you leave DDT or something?” So, we became acquaintances from there. We got to exchange, you know, like pleasantries, like hello backstage and on other places. And then about two years ago, we had a six man tag in DDT. At the time I was was doing the SA couple style. So, Suzuki-san just call me like “you couple idiot”, you know, and that was our beginning as well.

Then last year at BZW, there was a show where Suzuki-san and Kushida-san where also in France with me. So, in the end, we did sightseeing together. I was like, oh, I can’t believe I’m actually sightseeing with Minoru Suzuki all the way in France. So, you know, in a sense, we got closer together. We got to see the Eiffel Tower together. And then I believe it was in a show in my hometown in Osaka, I invited Suzuki-san to the show as well. So, I guess all of this led to this match happening to this coming month.

Pep: You’re one of the active DDT wrestlers with the most international experience. Is there a country you haven’t visited yet that you’d like to compete in?

MAO: I have had many thoughts now about traveling overseas to wrestle and people are like you gotta go to Mexico you know? You have to go to Mexico but like I don´t really want to go to Mexico. I’m kind of sorry because right now I’m not really interested in going to Mexico. But I do really love America.

Pep: We’ve seen that UJPW has unlocked many Dream Match opportunities. Wrestlers like Konosuke Takeshita, who are signed to various companies, can also compete with wrestlers from all over the world. If you could choose an opponent you haven’t faced yet, from anywhere in the world, who would you choose?

MAO: My number one possibility for a Dream Match is Moonlight Express vs. Motor City Machine Guns. That’s a dream match because during Zero-1, Alex Shelly was there. He had a career in New Japan Pro Wrestling as well. Motor City Machine Guns have a very unique style. They perfectly blend the American style and Japanese style together. And I believe that I also have that, you know, I have the Japanese style and the American indie style. I think that right know I’m one of the best blending those styles together. And then, having Mike Bailey as my tag team partner, it will be a very interesting clash of styles if that match could happen. Hopefully one day.

Pep: Moving away from wrestling, could you tell us about your hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not in a match?

MAO: When I’m not wrestling that day, I’m probably you know working on my band stuff. And when I’m not doing that, I’m just chilling at home. Thinking about wrestling. Just thinking about something. Whether I’m chilling at home, chilling in the park, chilling in the sauna, chilling while on a drive, I’m always thinking about something. Instead of just sitting down and just not doing anything, I’m always thinking about something.

Pep: We know you’re passionate about music and that you have a band, DOS QUATRO. What’s your creative process like when making music? What do you find in common between making music and wrestling?

MAO: In DOS QUATRO, we do appearances and how we perform hardcore music, obviously. So it’s our own unique style. But even then, you know, we chose a little bit something different from what normal hardcore music sounds like. So, the structure of it and how I structured my matches, you could see it’s almost even the same way. I have my own unique style, whether it is performing music or performing in a wrestling ring.

Pep: Your motto is “FUCKED UP WRESTLING FOR A FUCKED UP WORLD.” After experiencing more of the world, how would you describe what that means to someone who doesn’t know you yet?

MAO: In a sense I learned from this style, you know, how I got this style from The 37KAMIINA. The hurdle might be very hard to really understand what the motto means. It looks like it’s very cool. But I’m actually kind of like, in a sense, because the stuff we do in the ring is kind of fuck up. So you know, it’s hard to get in. But like, once you go into this world that I created, it’s gonna be hard to get out of it. So, it’s really a swamp that you never come out of and, and I’m very glad that I can do this style again. And the STRANGE LOVE CONNECTION, even though it’s still in the works. So, I hope people understands what it really means once you just start watching what we are doing now.
