Entrevista con MAO (DDT): Lo profesional y lo personal – Parte 1

DDT Pro Wrestling viene realizando su programación de verano en Japón y en Agosto realizará una nueva edición de WRESTLE PETER PAN. La edición 2025 del evento, se realizará en dos jornadas: 30 de agosto en Higashin Arena y 31 de agosto en Korakuen Hall. Uno de los combates confirmados para la segunda noche es un enfrentamiento entre Minoru Suzuki (c) y MAO por el DDT Universal Championship.

Pep S. Caro tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a MAO, retador al Campeonato Universal, antes de este importante show. MAO, es una de los luchadores con mayor actividad internacional en el roster de DDT. Los temas fueron sobre sus inicios en la lucha libre, ganar el torneo King of DDT 2024, The 37KAMIINA, STRANGE LOVE CONNECTION, Mike Bailey, Minoru Suzuki, Dream Match, DOS QUATRO y mucho más.

Nos gustaría destacar que esta es la primera entrevista que MAO realiza para un medio informativo en español y sin haber competido en un país en el que se hable ese idioma todavía.

Entrevista con MAO (DDT): Lo profesional y lo personal – Parte 1

Pep: Este año celebrarás tu décimo aniversario como luchador profesional. ¿Por qué decidiste serlo?

MAO: Siempre fui fan de la lucha libre profesional. De niño, me encantaba. Practicaba lucha libre en mi patio trasero y luego empecé a subir algunos vídeos a YouTube. Dio la casualidad de que Takagi-san, presidente de DDT, los encontró en YouTube. Me envió un mensaje que decía: «Si quería ser luchador, por favor, ven a DDT». Recibí este mensaje cuando tenía unos 14 años. Así que sí, así fue como empecé a pensar en ser luchador.

Pep: ¿Qué te motiva a competir al máximo nivel?

MAO: No diría motivación, sino más bien lo que siento que quiero hacer en este momento. En cuanto a grandes objetivos, no tengo metas a largo plazo. Pero lo que creo que es lo correcto para mí en este momento es lo que probablemente estaré haciendo en ese momento específico de mi carrera.

Pep: ¿Consideras a algún luchador importante o influyente cuando entraste en el mundo de la lucha libre?

MAO: Diría que TAKA Michinoku. Crecí siguiendo el estilo de TAKA Michinoku y, sobre todo, el estilo Michinoku Pro Wrestling de los 90. Así que, ya sabes, simplemente me gusta lo referente a lo que ayudó a formar la lucha libre japonesa de peso pesado junior, en cierto sentido.

Pep: Al principio de tu carrera, formaste parte de New Wrestling Aidoru junto a Makoto Oishi y Shuma Katsumata. ¿Qué recuerdas de esa época? ¿Qué crees que aprendiste?

MAO: Al principio, no quería hacer nada del tipo ídolo como lo que hacíamos en NwA. Pero, ya sabes, en esa época, no había muchas oportunidades para que los jóvenes lucharan en la cartelera principal, porque para eso estaba DNA. Pero gracias a la existencia de NwA, tuvimos oportunidades de luchar en los shows de DDT. Así que no me gustaba el rollo de los ídolos, pero ya sabes, desde que tuve la oportunidad de estar en el show, intenté hacerlo lo mejor posible.

Creo que aprendí mucho de Makoto Oishi porque es uno de los que, se podría decir, ayudó a construir el estilo junior en Japón. Trabajó bastante en KAIENTAI DOJO, lo que nos lleva de nuevo al estilo de TAKA Michinoku, que admiré de niño. Así que no solo TAKA Michinoku, sino también MEN’s Teioh. Y cuando hablamos de MEN’s Teioh, hay un combate de seis hombres muy famoso en Michinoku. Así que aprendí mucho, como a construir ese estilo de ser un luchador para combates de seis hombres gracias a Makoto Oishi.

Pep: También te vimos formar Moonlight Express junto a Mike Bailey. Ganaste los Campeonatos de Parejas KO-D. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de esta etapa de tu carrera? ¿Cuál es tu relación actual con Speedball?

MAO: Cuando se habla de MAO, uno de los factores más importantes, incluso el más importante, que contribuye a forjar mi carrera actual es Moonlight Express. Porque siento que mi mayor crecimiento como luchador fue durante esa época. Alrededor de 2019, pasamos unos dos meses juntos en una gira por Inglaterra. Y, sin esto, sin este equipo con Mike Bailey, en cierto sentido, no tendría la universalidad que tengo ahora, la capacidad de llevar mi estilo a todo el mundo. Así que, sin Mike Bailey, MAO no existiría hoy. Mis mejores recuerdos con Mike Bailey probablemente serían, de nuevo, los dos meses que pasamos juntos en Inglaterra.

Pep: ¿Es esa otra Strange Love Connection?

MAO: Ahora mismo tiene contrato con AEW y, por ciertas circunstancias de aquel entonces, no pudo viajar a Estados Unidos. Así que hubo un tiempo en el que no pudimos trabajar juntos. Pero ahora que tiene contrato con AEW, pueden pasar cosas. No es imposible que nos volvamos a cruzar, pero idealmente quiero que Speedball venga a Japón si es que puede.

Pep: Siguen compartiendo un vínculo. Ahora tiene contrato con AEW, pero ya hemos visto talento de AEW en DDT. Recientemente, MxM Collection estuvo allí.

MAO: Hay muchos equipos de parejas, muchísimos. Pero si Mike Bailey está aquí y podemos luchar como Moonlight Express ahora mismo, también podría ser muy interesante.

Pep: Luego te uniste a The 37KAMIINA y ganaste varios campeonatos de DDT. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de esta etapa de tu carrera? ¿Cuál es tu relación actual con los miembros de la facción?

MAO: The 37KAMIINA se formó durante los tiempos difíciles de la COVID-19, cuando la gente ni siquiera podía gritar ni corear, ni siquiera animar. Así que, podríamos decir que nosotros mismos ayudamos a construir el prestigio de DDT durante esos tiempos difíciles. Como pueden ver, durante esos tiempos difíciles, todos animaban a 37KAMIINA. Y, sobre todo, crecimos muchísimo, construimos nuestro legado, desde que todo se inició hasta mi enfrentamiento contra Ueno en Ryogoku el año pasado. Así que creo que realmente aguantamos, desde los inicios de 37KAMIINA hasta el evento principal de Ryogoku. Y lo logramos.

Hice equipo con Shunma para ganar el Campeonato en Parejas KO-D. Tuvimos muchas defensas, y al final, hace poco, ayudé a To-y a consolidarse como luchador. Siento que he logrado lo que necesitaba con la unidad. De esa manera, siento que me gradué de The 37KAMIINA. Seguimos siendo muy buenos amigos, e incluso una vez al mes nos vemos, ya sabes, para quedar por la noche, o para pasar la noche juntos.

Pep: Uno de tus logros más importantes podría ser ganar el Campeonato Universal DDT. Hasta la fecha, lo has ganado tres veces y también lo has defendido fuera de Japón. ¿Qué significa ese cinturón para ti? ¿Tienes alguna defensa que te gustaría destacar?

MAO: El Cinturón Universal, ya sabes, se creó justo antes del confinamiento, bueno, creo que fue en febrero, justo antes del confinamiento de 2020. Así que, en cierto sentido, el cinturón perdió el significado de lo que debía ser. Así que estoy muy contento de haber podido devolverle su significado original: un cinturón universal para ser defendido universalmente. Y se nota que me he convertido, en cierto sentido, en uno de los pilares de lo que se ha convertido el cinturón. Así que, hace poco, cuando Suzuki-san buscaba un retador y yo me presenté, se podía ver cómo los aficionados se volvían locos cuando salí a desafiarlo. Porque, como se puede ver, cuando ves a MAO, piensas en el cinturón universal.

En cuanto a las defensas especiales, diría que una fue el combate contra Hikaru Machida. Es un combate que me encanta y del que hablo a menudo. Creo que fue un combate único, incluso para lo que he hecho en mi carrera hasta ahora. Otro podría ser el que tuve contra Nate Webb. Un combate sin ring.

Pep: Otro es, sin duda, el torneo King of DDT 2024. Lo ganaste en 2024, tras derrotar a Kazusada Higuchi, Chris Brookes y Daisuke Sasaki. ¿Qué significó ganarlo para ti? ¿Cuál consideras que fue el combate más difícil del torneo?

MAO: Participé en King of DDT como Campeón Universal y logré llegar a la final, ganándola como tal. Así que el impulso fue realmente increíble. Y como ahora di lo mejor de mí como campeón, conseguí este resultado. El combate más difícil fue contra Poison Sawada JULIE, a quien enfrenté en la primera ronda, ya que es un ícono del pasado de DDT y tiene un estilo único. Comparar ese estilo con el mío también fue divertido. Y ganar fue muy especial para mí.

Pep: Actualmente también eres el Campeón Europeo en Parejas de BZW junto a Yoshihiko. Has defendido los campeonatos en Francia, Bélgica, Japón y Estados Unidos. ¿Qué se siente al representar a una organización internacional? ¿Qué significa ese cinturón para ti? ¿Tienes alguna defensa que te gustaría destacar?

MAO: Alrededor de 2020, la gente decía cosas buenas y malas de Yoshihiko. Ya sabes, Yoshihiko es un tema muy polémico en la industria de la lucha libre, ¿no? Así que quería mostrar la singularidad de Yoshihiko en toda la industria. Y, ya sabes, lo increíble que es Yoshihiko comparado con todas las demás copias de gente que intenta imitarle. Así que hicimos una gira por Estados Unidos. Fue una gira bastante famosa en Estados Unidos. Y de repente fuimos a Francia y nos convertimos en campeones; fue muy repentino. Pero me alegró mucho poder mostrar cómo esto, ya sabes, mostrar la singularidad de Yoshihiko en DDT y que no solo llegó a Japón, sino a Estados Unidos, a Francia y a todo el mundo. Hay muchos oponentes famosos, así que no puedo recordarlos ahora mismo. Pero hubo una vez en que Yoshihiko recibió una paliza brutal, pero luego simplemente cayó del cielo y llegó para salvarme y conseguir la victoria. ¡Yoshihiko es increíble!

Pep: Y Yoshihiko es una especie de leyenda. ¡Qué honor ser campeones juntos! ¿No?

MAO: Me alegra mucho que la gente aprenda a amar a DDT y a conocer lo que hacemos gracias a las giras con Yoshihiko. Lo he dicho en entrevistas previas, pero me considero “El Alma de lo Universal”. Así que mi misión en la vida es llevar la visión de DDT al mundo. Y sentí que este periodo con Yoshihiko es uno de los momentos más destacados de mi carrera hasta ahora.

Pep: En ese sentido, en abril estuviste en Estados Unidos y competiste en varios combates. Ocho combates durante ese fin de semana. ¿Cómo fue esa experiencia reciente? ¿Qué hiciste además de competir?

MAO: Durante el fin de semana, todos vinieron en fechas diferentes. Y yo vine un día antes solo para tener un combate en Las Vegas. Fue un fin de semana muy, muy ajetreado para mi. Por la mañana salía del hotel o motel con mi disfraz, iba a un combate, a otro combate y a otro. Volvía al hotel y lavaba mi vestuario a mano por la noche, me dormía, me despertaba al día siguiente, me bañaba y repetía más combates, y volvía por la noche. Fue un fin de semana muy ajetreado para mí. Disputé ocho combates. Planeaba ser el luchador japonés con más combates del fin de semana. Y casi llegué a nueve, pero desafortunadamente tuve que rechazar una oferta. Pero realmente sentí que, durante ese periodo, estaba viviendo al máximo.

Pep: This year you’ll celebrate your 10th anniversary as a professional wrestler. Why did you decide to become a professional wrestler?

MAO: I was always a fan of pro wrestling. I loved pro wrestling as a fan growing up. I did wrestling in my backyard and then started posting some clips on YouTube. So it happened to be that Takagi-san, President of DDT, found the clips on YouTube. He send me a message like, if I wanted to become a wrestler, please come to DDT. And I got this message when I was about 14 years old. So yeah, that’s how I started to think about becoming a wrestler.

Pep: What motivates you to compete at the highest level?

MAO: I wouldn’t say motivation, but more like what I feel like I want to do at this point of time. So, in terms of big goals, I don’t really have long stretch 10 year goals. But what I feel is the right thing for me at the moment is what I would probably be doing at that specific time in my career.

Pep: Do you have any wrestlers you consider important or influential to you when you entered the world of wrestling?

MAO: I would say TAKA Michinoku. I grew up following the style of TAKA Michinoku and mostly the 90s Michinoku Pro Wrestling style. So, you know, just read the basics of what made Japanese junior heavyeight wrestling, in a sense.

Pep: In the early part of your career, you were part of New Wrestling Aidoru alongside Makoto Oishi and Shuma Katsumata. What do you remember from this period? What do you think you learned?

MAO: In the beginning, I did not want to do any of the idol stuff with NwA. But you know, because during the time, there was not a lot of opportunities for the younger guys to wrestle the main card because that’s what DNA was for. But thanks to NwA being a thing, we had opportunities to wrestle in the actual DDT shows. So, I didn’t like the idol stuff, but you know, since I got the opportunity to be on the show, I just tried to do my best.

I think I learned a lot from Makoto Oishi because he’s one of the the guys you could say helped to build the junior style in Japan. Since he was based in KAIENTAI DOJO, which again leads back to the TAKA Michinoku style which I grew up admiring. So not just Taka Michinoku, but MEN’s Teioh as well. And when you talk about MEN’s Teioh, there’s a very famous six man tag in Michinoku. So, I really learned a lot, like how to build that six men’s style. Thanks to Makoto Oishi.

Pep: We also saw you form Moonlight Express alongside Mike Bailey. You won the KO-D Tag Team Championships. What memories do you have from this stage of your career? What is your current relationship with Speedball?

MAO: When you talk about MAO, like one of the most, you could see even the most important thing that helps build the career as to what MAO is right now is Moonlight Express. Because I really feel like I grew the most as a wrestler during that time. And around 2019, we spent about two months together in a tour in England. And, you know, without this, without this team with Mike Bailey, in a sense, I wouldn’t have the universalism that I have right now, you know, about bringing my style around the world. So, without Mike Bailey, there wouldn’t be MAO today. My fondest memories with Mike Bailey would probably be again, the two months we spent in England together.

Pep: Is that other Strange Love Connection?

MAO: Right now he’s contracted to AEW and, you know, thanks to some situations back then, he couldn’t really travel to America. So there’s a bit of time where we couldn’t really work together. But, now that he’s contracted to AEW, you know, things can happen. It’s not impossible that we might cross paths again, but ideally I want a Speedball to come to Japan if he can.

Pep: You still share a bond. He’s now contracted with AEW but we’ve seen AEW talent in DDT before. Recently MxM Collection was there.

MAO: There’s a lot of tag teams, a lot of tag teams. But if Mike Bailey is here and we can wrestle as Moonlight Express right now, it could be quite interesting too.

Pep: You then joined The 37KAMIINA and won several DDT championships. What memories do you have from this stage of your career? What is your current relationship with the members of the faction?

MAO: The 37KAMIINA was formed during tough times in COVID, you know, when people couldn’t even shout or chant, couldn’t even cheer. So, you could say we really helped to build the prestige of DDT ourselves during those tough times. As you can see, during those tough times, everybody was cheering for The 37KAMIINA. And, you know, especially, we grew so much, we built our legacy so much, you know, since it all built up to me against Ueno at Ryogoku last year. So, I think we really carried, from the very early eras of The 37KAMIINA all the way to the main event of Ryogoku. So, we managed to do that.

I teamed with Shunma to win the KO-D Tag Championship. We had a lot of defenses, and in the end, just recently, you know, I helped To- to establish himself as a wrestler. So, I feel like I have accomplished what I needed to be doing with the unit. So, in that way, I feel like I graduated from The 37KAMIINA. But, we’re still very good friends, and even once a month now, we still hang around, you know, to have a meetup overnight, like, having sleepovers together.

Pep: One of your most important achievements might be winning the DDT Universal Championship. To date, you’ve won it three times and have also defended it outside of Japan. What does that belt mean to you? Do you have any defenses you’d like to highlight?

MAO: The Universal Belt, you know, it was built just before the lockdown happened, like, well, I believe it was in February just before lockdown happened in 2020. So in a sense, the belt lost its meaning of what it was meant to become. So, I’m very glad that I was able to bring back the belt to what its original meaning was to be, you know, a universal belt to be defended universally. And you can tell that I’ve become, in a sense, one of the pillars of what the belt has become. So just recently, when Suzuki-san was looking for a challenger, and I stepped up to the plate, you could see how the fans were just going crazy when I walked out to do the challenge. Because, like, you can see that when you see MAO, you think of the universal belt.

Whereas for special defenses, I would say one was the match against Hikaru Machida. It’s a match I love and I often talk about. I think it was a very unique match even for what I’ve done during my career so far. Another one could be the one I had against Nate Webb. A match without a ring.

Pep: Another is undoubtedly the King of DDT 2024 tournament. You won it in 2024, after defeating Kazusada Higuchi, Chris Brookes, and Daisuke Sasaki. What did winning it mean to you? What do you consider to be the toughest match of the tournament?

MAO: I entered the King of DDT as Universal Champion, and I managed to go all the way to the finals and winning the finals as a Champion. So, the momentum was really insane in my favor. And because now I did my best as a champion, it led to this result. So, for the toughest match, it was against Poison Sawada JULIE’s out of the very first round because he’s an icon of DDT’s pass and he has a very unique style. So, you know, putting that style against my very unique style was fun as well. And to come come out on top of that, it felt very special for me.

Pep: You are also currently the BZW European Tag Team Champion with Yoshihiko. You have defended the Championships in France, Belgium, Japan, and the United States. What does it feel like to represent an international organization? What does that belt mean to you? Do you have any defenses you’d like to highlight?

MAO: Around 2020, people are saying like good things about Yoshihiko and bad things about Yoshihiko. You know, Yoshiko is a very divisive subject in the wrestling industry, right? So, I wanted to show how the uniqueness of Yoshihiko is among like the whole industry. And, you know, how amazing Yoshihiko is compared to like all the other copies of people who are trying to be like Yoshihiko. So, we had a tour in America. It was quite a famous tour in America. And then all of a sudden we went to France, we became champions, it was very sudden. But I was very glad to be able to show how this, you know, showing the uniqueness of Yoshihiko in DDT, not just went to Japan, but in America and in France and all over the world.

There’s a lot of famous opponents so I can’t really remember off the top of my head. But there’s one time when Yoshihiko got beaten up so badly but then he just came from the heavens, just fall all the way down for the winning save. Yoshihiko is incredible!

Pep: And Yoshihiko is kind of a legend. What an honour to be champions together, right?

MAO: I’m very glad that people learn to love about DDT, learn to know about DDT thanks to the tours with Yoshihiko. I’ve said this in previews interviews but I consider myself “The Soul of Universal”. So, it’s kind of my mission in life to bring DDT to the world. And I felt like this period with Yoshihiko is one of his biggest highlights of my career so far.

Pep: Along those lines, in April you were in the United States and competed in several matches. 8 matches during that weekend. What was that recent experience like? What did you do besides competing in matches?

MAO: During the weekend, everybody came on different dates. And I came one day earlier just to do a show in Las Vegas. So, you know, it was a very, very busy weekend for him. So, in the morning I would get out of the hotel or motel in my costume, go for a match, go for another match and go for another match. Come back to the hotel and watch my costume with my bare hands, go to sleep, wake up the next day, rinse and repeat more matches, come back at night. It was such a busy weekend for me. I did eight matches. I was planning to be the one Japanese wrestler with the highest amount of matches in the weekend. And I almost got to nine, but I had to unfortunately say no to one offer. But I really felt like during that period, I was living the most during the whole time.
