Dream Star Fighting Marigold dará inicio mañana al Dream Star GP 2025, torneo de tipo round robin en el que compite la mayor parte del roster de la compañía. Es el torneo más importante del año en Marigold y esta segunda edición incluye 16 participantes divididos en dos bloques.

Pep S. Caro tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a Mai Sakurai. Conocida como “Cho-Kifujin”, Mai respondió varias de las preguntas de Pep. Los temas fueron sobre el inicio de su carrera, ganar el United National Championship ante Miku Aono, sus defensas titulares a la fecha, el Dream Star GP 2025, la rivalidad entre Marigold y Marvelous, competir en el extranjero, su vida personal y más.

Entrevista con Mai Sakurai (Marigold): Lo profesional y lo personal

Pep: Este año celebraste tu 5to aniversario como luchadora profesional. ¿Por qué decidiste convertirte en luchadora? ¿Qué te motiva a competir al más alto nivel actualmente?

Mai: Hace seis años, cuando vi lucha libre profesional en vivo por primera vez, me conmovió profundamente y me emocioné profundamente. Decidí convertirme en luchadora profesional porque quería inspirar y dar energía a la gente.

Mi motivación para competir proviene de la misma sensación que tuve cuando vi lucha libre profesional por primera vez como espectador, y siempre subo al ring con el deseo de transmitir la grandeza de la lucha libre profesional al público.

Pep: Comenzaste el 2025 venciendo a Miku Aono para ganar el Marigold United National Championship en First Dream. ¿Qué sensaciones te dejó ese combate? ¿Qué sientes que aprendiste del combate? ¿Qué impresiones tienes de Miku como competidora?

Mai: Este fue el combate más emotivo que he tenido. Ganar el título contra Miku, quien también fue mi oponente de Debut, fue profundamente conmovedor. Para mí, fue un combate en el que dejé al descubierto todos mis arrepentimientos: haberme recuperado del fondo, la amargura de perder en la final de Dream Star el año pasado y haber tomado la decisión correcta de venir a Marigold.

A lo largo del combate, sentí la altura del muro de una campeona individual muchas veces. Miku es físicamente fuerte, tiene golpes potentes y es una luchadora versátil. Al final, gané gracias a mi determinación, pero aún no creo haberla superado, así que definitivamente quiero volver a pelear con el cinturón en juego algún día.

Pep: Tu primera defensa fue contra Nagisa Nozaki de Darkness Revolution y retuviste el cinturón. ¿Qué sensaciones te dejó ese combate? ¿Qué impresiones tienes de Nozaki como competidora?

Mai: Luché contra Nagisa Nozaki en el show inaugural the Marigold, pero empatamos, y luego me arrebató el cinturón de las Estrellas Gemelas. Así que estaba decidido a vengarme, pero era una oponente muy fuerte. Es una luchadora inteligente que usa trucos astutos durante los combates, así que tuve que usar la cabeza en el combate contra Nagisa Nozaki. Y aunque sabía que ambas habíamos crecido desde nuestro primer combate individual hace tres años, ella ha crecido mucho más de lo que imaginaba, volviéndose más fuerte y robusta.

Siendo honesta, hubo algunos momentos peligrosos, así que me siento aliviada de haber podido defender mi título. Chanyota es poderosa y tiene un carácter interesante y una gran presencia en el micrófono, así que estar con ella es una experiencia de aprendizaje, ya que me doy cuenta de muchas cosas que yo no tengo.

Pep: También defendiste el título con éxito ante Erina Yamanaka. Incluso ganaste una apuesta para que se convierta en tu instructora personal de yoga. ¿Qué sensaciones te dejó ese combate? ¿Qué impresiones tienes de Erina como competidora? ¿Ya has tenido oportunidad de asistir a una sesión de yoga junta a Erina?

Mai: Al principio, pensé que Erina era una luchadora desconocida, pero en cuanto subió al ring de Marigold, desafió por mi cinturón UN, y no me disgustó su audacia. Es una luchadora que sabe mostrar sus fortalezas. Era mucho más dura y fuerte de lo que imaginaba. También tiene un carácter fuerte, y hace poco le prometí ir a yoga la próxima vez, ¡así que estaré allí!

Pep: Además, defendiste con éxito el cinturón ante Misa Matsui también de Darkness Revolution. Fue un combate intenso. ¿Qué sensaciones te dejó ese combate? ¿Qué impresiones tienes de Misa como competidora?

Mai: Me impresionó la versatilidad de Misa. Parece que le gusta provocar a la gente, como cuando me salpicó agua y me hizo otras humillaciones, y mis emociones también se encendieron.

Fue un combate en el que se notaba la empatía del público y su reacción a todo lo que sucedía, como si dijeran: “Me han tratado así, así que voy a devolverle el golpe con más fuerza”.

Pep: Finalmente, antes del evento de aniversario, defendiste con éxito el título ante Chika Goto. ¿Qué sensaciones te dejó ese combate? ¿Qué impresiones tienes de Chika como competidora?

Mai: Tenía envidia del físico imponente de Chika. Su punto fuerte es su energía. Sin embargo, ese día en particular, estaba muy callada. Parece que tenía dolor de garganta y no podía hablar en absoluto. Pero después del combate, volvió a hablar, y así es ella, lo que me dio ganas de recalcárselo (se ríe a carcajadas después de responder).

Pep: En paralelo has formado el equipo Noble Ultimate Twins junto a Chanyota. ¿Cómo ha sido hasta ahora trabajar con ella como equipo? ¿Con qué frecuencia entrenan juntas o realizan actividades para fortalecer el vínculo entre ambas?

Mai: Creo que la confianza es muy importante. En los combates por equipos, creo que la sensación de cariño por tu pareja genera confianza. Además, Chanyota y yo tenemos una perspectiva similar de lo que queremos en un combate, así que me siento cómoda con ella. No tenemos una frecuencia fija de entrenamiento, pero vamos juntas al CrossFit, salimos a comer después de entrenar y hablamos de todo, desde lucha libre profesional hasta asuntos personales. Es una presencia valiosa en mi vida.

Pep: Juntas se enfrentaron a Magenta, equipo conformado por Riko Kawahata y Maria de Marvelous, en un combate por los Marigold Twin Star Championships. Lastimosamente tu equipo perdió y tu recibiste el pin. ¿Qué sensaciones te dejó ese combate?

Mai: Era un combate entre Marigold y Marvelous, así que me decepcionó perder y me enojé conmigo misma por no haberlo hecho bien. Fue frustrante, pero el trabajo en equipo de Magenta fue excelente y fueron realmente fuertes.

Pep: En el show más reciente de Marigold en Korakuen Hall, defendiste el cinturón contra Riko Kawahata. ¿Cómo ha sido tu preparación para este combate? ¿Realmente estabas dispuesta a afeitarte las cejas si perdías?

Mai: Perdí la lucha por el título en parejas y me vencieron, así que mi plan era desahogar toda esa frustración en un combate individual. También había investigado a mi oponente y la había estudiado. Si perdía, estaba preparada para afeitarme las cejas.

Pep: Actualmente Marigold y Marvelous están enfrentados en una rivalidad interpromocional que está siendo muy bien recibida también fuera de Japón. ¿Hay alguien más del roster de Marvelous que quieras enfrentar?

Mai: He tenido una pelea corta con Takumi Iroha en el ring de NOAH antes, pero nunca hemos tenido una pelea adecuada, así que me gustaría competir con ella nuevamente.

Pep: Estamos cerca del DREAM STAR GP 2025. En la primera edición lograste llegar a la final, aunque lastimosamente perdiste contra Utami Hayashishita. ¿Consideras que es tu obligación ganar este año? Si pudieras escoger, ¿a quién te gustaría enfrentar en una posible final?

Pep: La primera y única vez que competiste en Pro Wrestling NOAH fue durante WRESTLE MAGIC 2024 en mayo del año pasado. ¿Te gustaría volver a competir en NOAH? ¿Hay alguna luchadora que haya aparecido en MONDAY MAGIC que te gustaría enfrentar?

Mai: ¡Claro que quiero volver a participar en NOAH! Los oponentes que me gustaría enfrentar son la Campeona Femenina GHC, Takumi Iroha, y Great Sakuya.

Pep: Algunos miembros del roster de Marigold como Victoria Yuzuki, Misa Matsui y Rea Seto participaron de una rápida gira en Estados Unidos con SUKEBAN. ¿Te gustaría competir en el extranjero?

Mai: ¡Me encantaría competir en el extranjero! ¡En Estados Unidos o donde sea!

Pep: ¿Podrías contarnos sobre tus hobbies? ¿Cómo es un día normal en tu vida cuando no tienes un combate en Marigold?

Mai: Me gustan los saunas, así que voy a saunas, a aguas termales y también hago viajes rápidos.

Antes de una pelea por el título o un combate importante, estoy completamente concentrada en el combate durante aproximadamente un mes, así que voy a sesiones de entrenamiento fuera del entrenamiento de lucha libre que hacemos en Marigold, y paso muchos de mis días libres en torno a la lucha libre. Incluso cuando salgo a comer con personas del negocio o con mis seniors, hablamos principalmente de lucha libre, así que mi trabajo se ha convertido en mi pasatiempo (risas).

Pep: El mundo de la lucha libre presenta posibilidades infinitas. Si pudieras escoger a cualquier luchadora del mundo para enfrentarla en un combate singles, ¿a quién escogerías?

Mai: Si pudiera escoger a cualquiera, sería Alexa Bliss.

Pep: This year you celebrated your 5th anniversary as a professional wrestler. Why did you decide to become a wrestler? What motivates you to compete at the highest level today?

Mai: Six years ago, when I watched live professional wrestling for the first time in my life, I was deeply moved and emotionally involved. I decided to become a professional wrestler because I wanted to inspire and give energy to people.

My motivation for competing comes from the same feeling I had when I first watched professional wrestling as a spectator, and I always step into the ring with the desire to convey the greatness of professional wrestling to the audience.

Pep: You kicked off 2025 by defeating Miku Aono to win the Marigold United National Championship at First Dream. How did that match feel? What do you feel you learned from the match? What are your impressions of Miku as a competitor?

Mai: This was the most emotional match I’ve ever had. Winning the title against Miku, who was also my opponent in my debut match, was deeply moving. For me, it was a match where I laid bare all of my regrets: crawling back from rock bottom, the bitterness of losing in the finals of the Dream Star last year, and making the decision to come to Marigold the right decision.

Throughout the match, I felt the height of the wall of a singles champion status many times. Miku is physically strong, has powerful striking, and is a versatile wrestler. In the end, I won through sheer determination, but I still don’t think I’ve surpassed her, so I definitely want to fight with the belt on the line again someday.

Pep: Your first defense was against Nagisa Nozaki of Darkness Revolution, and you retained the belt. How did that match feel? What are your impressions of Nozaki as a competitor?

Mai: I fought Nagisa Nozaki in Marigold’s inaugural show, but we drew, and then she took the Twin Star belt from me. So, I was determined to get revenge, but she was a very strong opponent.

She’s a smart wrestler who uses sneaky tricks during matches, so I had to use my head in the match against Nagisa Nozaki. However, in the end, the 10 million yen were still stolen, so I will definitely get it back.

Pep: You then successfully defended the belt against Chanyota, someone you’ve teamed with in the past. How did that match feel? What are your impressions of Chanyota as a competitor?

Mai: First of all, I was happy to be reunited with Chanyota again in the Marigold ring. I think I was able to go all out because I was going head-to-head with someone I trust. And even though I knew we’d both grown since our first singles match three years ago, she’s grown far more than I could have imagined, becoming stronger and more robust.

To be honest, there were some dangerous moments, so I’m relieved that I was able to defend my title. Chanyota is powerful and has an interesting character and microphone presence, so being with her is a learning experience as I notice a lot of things that I don’t have.

Pep: You also successfully defended the title against Erina Yamanaka. You even won a bet to have her become your personal yoga instructor. How did that match feel? What are your impressions of Erina as a competitor? Have you already had the chance to attend a yoga session with Erina?

Mai: At first, I thought Erina was an unknown wrestler, but as soon as she stepped into the Marigold ring she challenged my UN, and I didn’t dislike her boldness.

She’s a wrestler who’s good at showing off her strengths. She was much tougher and stronger than I imagined. She’s also a strong character, and just recentyly I’ve promised to go to yoga next time, so I’ll be there!

Pep: You also successfully defended your belt against Misa Matsui, also from Darkness Revolution. It was an intense match. How did that match feel? What are your impressions of Misa as a competitor?

Mai: I was impressed by Misa’s versatility. She seems to like to tease people, as when she splashed water on me and did other humiliating things, my emotions were fired up too.

It was a match where you could really feel the audience empathizing with her and reacted to everything that happened in the match, as if to say, “I’ve been treated like this, so I’m going to hit her back twice as hard”.

Pep: Finally, before the anniversary event, you successfully defended your title against Chika Goto. How did that match feel? What are your impressions of Chika as a competitor?

Mai: I was envious of Chika’s big physique. Her good point is that she is energetic. However, on that particular day, she was very quiet. It seems that she had a sore throat and couldn’t speak at all. But after the match, she was able to speak again, and that’s just how she is, making me want to point it out (Laughs out loud after answering).

Pep: At the same time, you’ve formed the Noble Ultimate Twins team with Chanyota. What’s it been like working with her as a team so far? How often do you train together or do activities to strengthen your bond?

Mai: I think trust is very important. In tag matches, I think the feeling of caring for your partner leads to trust. Also, Chanyota and I have a similar approach to the match, so I feel comfortable around her. We don’t have a set practice frequency, but we go to CrossFit together, go out to eat after practice, and talk about everything from pro wrestling to personal matters. She’s a valuable presence in my life.

Pep: Together, you faced Magenta, a team made up of Riko Kawahata and Maria from Marvelous, in a match for the Marigold Twin Star Championships. Unfortunately, your team lost, and you were pinned. How did that match feel?

Mai: It was a match between Marigold and Marvelous, so I was disappointed to lose and angry at myself for not doing well. It was frustrating, but Magenta’s teamwork was great and they were really strong.

Pep: At Marigold’s upcoming Korakuen Hall show, you’ll be defending the belt against Riko Kawahata. How have you prepared for this match? Are you really willing to shave your eyebrows if you lose?

Mai: I lost in the tag title match and I received the pin, so my plan was going to let out all that frustration in a singles match. I had also researched my opponent and studied her. If I had loss, I was prepared to shave off my eyebrows.

Pep: Marigold and Marvelous are currently locked in an interpromotional rivalry that’s also being very well-received outside of Japan. Is there anyone else from the Marvelous roster you’d like to face?

Mai: I have had a short match with Takumi Iroha in the NOAH ring before, but we have never had a proper match, so I would like to compete with her again.

Pep: DREAM STAR GP 2025 is coming up. In the first edition, you made it to the finals, though you unfortunately lost to Utami Hayashishita. Do you feel it’s your obligation to win this year? If you could choose, who do you you want to face in a potential Final?

Mai: I want to reach the Finals and face Utami Hayashishita in the Finals. I can only see myself winning this year.

Pep: The first and only time you competed in Pro Wrestling NOAH was during WRESTLE MAGIC 2024 in May of last year. Would you like to compete in NOAH again? Are there any wrestlers who appeared at MONDAY MAGIC that you’d like to face?

Mai: Of course, I want to participate in the NOAH again! The opponents I want to fight are GHC Women’s Champion Takumi Iroha and Great Sakuya.

Pep: Some members of the Marigold roster, such as Victoria Yuzuki, Misa Matsui, and Rea Seto, participated in a quick tour of the United States with SUKEBAN. Would you like to compete abroad?

Mai: I would love to compete overseas! In America or anywhere!!

Pep: Could you tell us about your hobbies? What is a typical day in your life like when you don’t have a match in Marigold?

Mai: I like saunas, so I go to saunas, hot springs, and also take quick trips.

Before a title fight or a big match, I’m fully focused on the match for about a month, so I go to training sessions outside the wrestling training we do in Marigold, and I spend a lot of my days off wrestling. Even when I go out to eat with people involved or my seniors, we mostly talk about wrestling, so my work has become my hobby (laughs).

Pep: The world of wrestling presents endless possibilities. If you could choose any female wrestler in the world to face in a singles match, who would it be?

Mai: If I could choose anyone it would be Alexa Bliss.
